Elisa Farinacci is a Post Doctoral student in Cinema, Photography and Television at the Department of the Arts (DAR) of the University of Bologna. She earned a PhD with double degree in History at the Department of History, Culture and Civilization of the University of Bologna and in Cultural Anthropology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. At the Department of the Arts she is working on a project on the circulation and reception of contemporary Italian audiovisual products in Europe. She is also collaborating with the Research Center on Media Education, Information and Education Technology (CREMIT) of the Catholic University of Milan. At CREMIT she is working on a research project focusing on the use of audiovisual products in educational environments. She is also curator of the international column “Global Cremit: International Perspectives”.
Claudio Bisoni Università di Bologna

Claudio Bisoni teaches Studies of Gender in the Media, and Film History at the University of Bologna. His research focuses on the relationship between criticism, aesthetics and modes of reception, as well as on North American and Italian cinema of the 1960s and ’70s. His publications include: La critica cinematografica. Metodo, storia e scrittura (Bologna, 2006); Gli anni affollati. La cultura cinematografica italiana (1970-1979) (Roma, 2009); Elio Petri. Indagine su un cittadino al di sopra di ogni sospetto (Torino, 2011) and Cinema, sorrisi e canzoni. Il film musicale italiano degli anni Sessanta (Rubbettino, 2020). His essays and articles have appeared in various edited volumes and journals, including La valle dell’Eden, Fotogenia, Close-up, Cinergie, Bianco e nero, Cinéma & Cie, Fata Morgana, Comunicazioni sociali, The Italianist.

Abstract

The article focuses on the international reception of the first season of the TV series L’amica geniale (My Brilliant Friend, 2018-). This Italian media product has been distributed and circulated in numerous countries around the globe as the television adaptation of the first book of Elena Ferrante’s bestselling Neapolitan Novels. Generally, the forms of representation and narration of Italianness in Italian TV series that circulate abroad present two distinctive traits: on the one hand, they feature a globally recognizable image of Italian identity and culture, and on the other hand, they narrate stories that are deeply rooted in Italian local contexts. L’amica geniale places in the middle of this spectrum. The aim of this article is to discuss how the audience of the tv series contributes to defining its identity as a transnational/Italian cultural product by fostering symbolic processes often in tension with each other. L’amica geniale appeals to the foreign public both due to its local features, that is, by presenting elements that can be easily traced back to Italian history and culture, and because it can be inscribed within the broad label of quality tv.
