Samuel Fernández-Pichel is professor of media and cultural studies at the International Centre, Pablo de Olavide Universityin Seville (Spain). He holds a BA in English & American Studies and earned a PhD in Media Studies from the University of Seville. He has (co)authored over 20 publications in scholarly journals (including the European Journal of English Studies) and edited collections. Among his works are the books Social Imaginaries on American Film in the Age of George W. Bush (2001–2009) (in Spanish), and Imágenes resistentes (on contemporary independent cinema in Spain, also in Spanish). His research interests are currently centered on film and ideology, and digital culture.

Abstract

The present paper examines the construction of overlapping (trans)national and gendered (female) imaginaries in Kurdwin Ayub’s Paradise! Paradise! (Paradies! Paradies!, 2016). Drawing, among other sources, on Lipovetsky & Serroy’s (2007) theories about the multiplexity-image, this essay argues that Ayub’s re-negotiation, and self-representation, of her own hybrid identity in (and through) the film results in the coalescence between, on the one hand, global media culture and traditional (Kurdish) folklore and, on the other hand, between pseudo-ethnographic filmmaking and the aesthetic deregulation associated to new media practices.
