The article tries to explain how the figure of Pauline Kael, as a film critic, was instrumental in re-defining the role of the b-movies and the so-called “trash” cinema in the Hollywood industry between the 1960s and the 1970s. In doing so, her personal writing style is explored, as well as her ability to raise questions about film art that other authors can’t see. The entire discussion is inserted in the cultural and historical context of the time, to understand, starting from an excellent example, what film criticism was and why it was so important.Downloads
