Paolo Simoni
Paolo Simoni has a PhD in Cultural Heritage from Turin Polytechnic and is a founding member and director of Home Movies – Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia. His interests are in both academic research and artistic production. As a research fellow currently at the University of Padua and formerly at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, he is engaged in projects of recovering and reworking archival film materials, and is the author of several articles and essays on amateur cinema, focusing primarily on the relation between audiovisual sources, personal stories and history, and on the reuse and re-contextualization of archival images. As author, curator and producer, he has completed a large number of audiovisual archive-based projects, among which are Miss Cinema – Archivio Mossina, Formato Ridotto, Expanded Archive, Cinematic Bologna, Play the City Reggio Emilia.
Ilaria Ferretti
Ilaria Ferretti studied Communication Sciences at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. From 2008 to 2012, she worked on the research project Osservatorio Reggio Emilia, organised by UNIMORE, Home Movies – Archivio Nazionale del Film di Famiglia and the Reggio Emilia municipality. In recent years, her work has been focused on the interplay between space and its representation in amateur films. In 2015, she worked on the conception and realization of the web-app Play the City RE, a map that allows users to explore the urban space through the geolocation of rare moving images from amateur films.
Nicola M. Dusi Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia
Nicola M. Dusi, PhD in Semiotics, is Senior Lecturer of Media Semiotics at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Department of Communication and Economics. He is the author of the sociosemiotic essays Il cinema come traduzione (2003); Dal cinema ai media digitali. Logiche del sensibile tra corpi, oggetti, passioni (2014); Contromisure. Trasposizioni e intermedialità (2015). He co-edited Remix-Remake. Pratiche di replicabilità (2006), and Matthew Barney. Polimorfismo, multimodalità, neobarocco (2012). He also co-edited some special issues of international journals: Versus (85-87, 2000) dedicated to “Intersemiotic Translation”; Iris (30, 2004) dedicated to “Film Adaptation: Methodological Questions, Aesthetic Questions”; Degrés (141, 2010) about “Dance Research and Transmedia Practices”.

Abstract

Our article is divided into three connected sections. The first one discusses the image of the city in amateur movies, taking into account the cinematic urban archeology of home movies and operational practices of databases, Geographical Information Systems, maps, installations. We propose the notion of “amateur city” as the synthesis of multiple, located views collected in a long period of time projected onto a map. The second section describes the Play the City app, a digital tool to map and navigate the urban space, between the past and the present, through 120 clips of amateur filmmakers. The third part deals with the idea of mapping the “storyworld” of a city through the app and opens up some theoretical perspectives on film images and geo-located systems.
