Abstract

People’s Park (2012), Leviathan (2012), Foreign Parts (2010), the most representative films of the Sensory Ethnography Lab at Harvard, are the starting point of this essay. It aims to highlight the relations between the forms of a sensory cinema and some of the most powerful reflections about landscape in the Twentieth century, such as Heidegger’s concept of “dwelling”, Deleuze’s “movement of world”, and Agamben’s landscape as “inappropriable”. Focusing on the rethinking of a philosophical aesthetic as the foundation of a new practice of images (the base of the idea of Sensory Ethnography), the essay shows how the three films become real laboratories of aesthetic ideas, in which the landscape becomes a form of cinema.
