Jennifer Malvezzi (PhD) carries out teaching and research activities at the University of Parma and is an Adjunct Professor in Multimedia Didactics at SantaGiulia Fine Arts Academy in Brescia. Her research is mainly focused on the relationship between the moving image and the other arts with a specific focus on film and video and their relationship with criticism. On these topics she has written various essays that have appeared in national and international scientific journals and collective volumes and co-curated some exhibitions. She is the author of the monograph Remedi-action. Dieci anni di videoteatro italiano (Postmedia Books, 2015). She is also part of the research group that studies the pervasiveness of film culture in non-sector magazines for the decade 1945-1955 (Unipr, Progetto SIR) and she collaborates with Home Movies Archive for “Art & Experimental Film”, a project dedicated to the recovery and the reenactment of artists and filmmaker films.

Abstract

The essay examines a programmatic letter written by the English neo-futurist group Archigram to the magazine “IN. Arguments of images and design” in 1972. Informed by the theories of Marshall McLuhan and the coeval practices of Guerrilla Television, the letter was decisive for the project of La cellula abitativa, an experimental audiovisual communication system designed by Ugo La Pietra that forecast the characteristics of web and social networks. The propotype of the device, that was technically practicable, was presented the same year in the pivotal exhibition Italy the New Domestic Landscape at the MoMA of New York.
